Oliver Davis

Football | 1973-76

Oliver Davis established himself as one of the premier defensive backs in Tennessee State football history during a standout career from 1973-76 under legendary head coach John Merritt. A key contributor to one of the most successful eras in program history, Davis helped the Tigers capture the 1973 Black College National Championship and maintain their status as a national powerhouse throughout his four-year career. His exceptional play in the secondary earned him Pittsburgh Courier Black College All-America honors in 1976, recognizing him among the top defensive players in the nation. Davis’ combination of speed, coverage ability and physical play made him a cornerstone of the Tigers’ defense and helped elevate Tennessee State’s reputation as one of the nation’s premier producers of professional football talent. His collegiate success led to selection by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round of the 1977 NFL Draft, becoming the 102nd overall pick. Davis went on to enjoy a successful professional career with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals, earning starting roles in the NFL and appearing in Super Bowl XVI with the Bengals following the 1981 season.
