Greg Goodwin
Baseball | 1976-79
Greg Goodwin was a cornerstone of one of the most successful eras in Tennessee State baseball history, serving as a four-year starter from 1976-79 and never playing on a losing team during his collegiate career. After earning a starting position as a freshman, Goodwin became a consistent contributor for the Tigers and was selected by his teammates as team captain during his senior season. That 1979 squad finished 30-12 and is still regarded as one of the greatest teams in program history. A dynamic leadoff hitter and elite defensive player, Goodwin concluded his Tennessee State career with a .338 batting average, a .985 fielding percentage, and an extraordinary 77 stolen bases in 80 attempts. His senior season was particularly impressive as he stole 41 bases in 42 attempts, ranking third nationally. Following his playing career, Goodwin participated in a free-agent tryout with the San Francisco Giants before returning to Tennessee State as a graduate assistant in the Sports Information Department, working alongside Hall of Famers Kindell Stephens and Samuel Whitmon. Goodwin went on to build a distinguished career in education, coaching, administration and professional baseball, serving as a successful high school coach, principal, athletic director and Major League Baseball scout with the Florida Marlins and Los Angeles Dodgers. His accomplishments include induction into the Georgia Dugout Club Hall of Fame, recognition as DeKalb County Coach of the Decade, the Atlanta Braves Unsung Hero Award, and multiple lifetime achievement honors.
